Throughout his academic career, he earned his medical degree from the Tufts University School of Medicine in 1979 and completed his residency in physical medicine & rehabilitation at the University of Washington in 1982. Later, he obtained a Master of Public Health degree (MPH), and a Master of Business Administration degree (MBA).
